Class Gender Locks and Update Plans

Yes: the announced Early Access starting system retains class gender locks, but their removal is now in development. Female Warrior is planned for the first update in December. Additional gender options are intended to follow class by class, with the goal of removing every class gender lock by full release.

For a character you want to create immediately, use the current class-specific options. If you specifically want female Warrior, the December plan is the relevant milestone. If you want another currently unavailable combination, there is no class-specific date to use yet. The useful choice is between an available combination you actually want to play and waiting for the one you require.

Current class and gender pairings

The network-test and demo descriptions agree on four class pairings: Warrior and Berserker are male, while Ranger and Mage are female. The announced staged rollout begins by adding female Warrior rather than replacing every pairing simultaneously.

Weapon preference matters alongside gender preference because choosing another class changes the combat kit. The following comparison is a character-choice aid, not a class strength ranking or a guide to every weapon skill.

ClassGender in the described starting systemTwo described weapon stylesAnnounced additional gender timing
WarriorMaleLongsword and GreatswordFemale Warrior planned for December's first update
BerserkerMaleAxe and Shield and WarhammerNo individual rollout date established
RangerFemaleLongbow and HatchetNo individual rollout date established
MageFemaleElemental Staff and WaveswordNo individual rollout date established

If your priority is a male character, the current pairings point toward Warrior or Berserker. If it is a female character, they point toward Ranger or Mage. Those choices do not reproduce another class's weapons simply because the character presentation suits you better.

Male Warrior character reference

Male Warrior is one of the described starting class and gender pairings.

If your requirement is a female character in close combat rather than the Warrior class specifically, Ranger's Hatchet and Mage's Wavesword are the currently described alternatives to inspect. They offer different combat identities, so compare their actual movement and skill interactions before deciding. This can satisfy a broad melee preference now without treating either option as the promised female Warrior.

How the announced position changed after the network test

The September network-test response acknowledged extensive feedback about gender-locked classes. At that point, the stated plan was to keep the current system at Early Access while prioritizing combat and class refinement. Expanding gender choice remained an area for future consideration.

The later Steam Next Fest details moved that position forward: development of additional options was underway, with a gradual class-by-class introduction. That notice also said the changes would not be ready for the Next Fest demo. A demo player still seeing fixed pairings was therefore seeing the expected version of that event, not proof that the development announcement was false.

The pre-launch producer letter then named the first concrete step. Female Warrior was planned for the first update in December, followed by further options in later updates. The broader goal became removing gender locks from every class by full release.

This timeline explains why an older answer saying the locks remain and a newer answer saying they are being removed can both describe real announcements. One concerns the starting system; the other concerns the rollout that follows it. The present decision needs both pieces.

Choose which requirement is essential to your character

Start with the requirement you are least willing to change: the combat class, the character's gender, or beginning immediately. The starting pairings can satisfy some combinations of those requirements, but not every combination at once.

If Warrior's sword kit and a female character are both essential, choosing Mage just because Mage is female does not solve the original preference. Mage's Wavesword is a close-combat magical weapon, but it is still a different kit from Warrior's Longsword or Greatsword. The female Warrior update is the direct announced route to the combination you want.

If playing a male character now matters more than using a ranged magical kit, inspect the available male classes on their own terms. They can be sensible choices if their combat interests you. They are not temporary cosmetic versions of Mage, and a different class should not be selected on the assumption that it later becomes the class you originally wanted.

If beginning with friends immediately is the main priority and you already like an available pairing, you can judge that character as a complete present choice. There is no need to make the decision depend on changing it later. This keeps the initial character aligned with the experience you are actually choosing today.

What the female Warrior preview means for December

The producer letter presents female Warrior as internal work in progress and warns that the final version may differ. That is useful evidence of what is being developed, while the actual selectable character remains tied to the planned public update.

December is a planned update window, not a specified day in this material. Use it as the next milestone to watch if female Warrior is your requirement. A precise calendar date, update hour, or already-live status would need a later release announcement.

The same first update is planned to introduce Gladius as Warrior's third weapon type. That is a separate addition to the class. If both features interest you, review both when the update arrives; neither a character-model preview nor a weapon demonstration alone describes the final contents of the released update.

For other classes, the important information is that the rollout continues after the first step. The current plan does not name the order in which every remaining gender option will arrive. A Warrior-first announcement is therefore useful for Warrior planning without becoming a schedule for Mage, Ranger, or Berserker.

Appearance improvements answer a different question

The launch changes include more character presets and an option to hide glasses and masks on helmet appearances. Those can help you achieve a preferred look within the available character choices. They do not add an unannounced class and gender pairing by themselves.

During creation, separate the class selection from the appearance choices offered within it. Pick the combat identity you intend to use, check the gender option for that class, and then evaluate the available appearance controls. This order prevents spending time on presets before discovering that the required combination is not selectable.

A screenshot can also show only one part of that process. A new face preset demonstrates an appearance choice; a class-selection screen can establish the class pairing. Look for the part that actually answers your requirement rather than interpreting every customization image as evidence of unrestricted gender selection.

If a particular visual feature matters as much as the class pairing, inspect its actual presentation when the relevant public option arrives. The internal preview's purpose is to show development progress, and its own qualification means the exact final appearance is still subject to change.

Existing characters need their own conversion information

Adding a gender option at character creation does not by itself explain how an existing character can use it. The announcement does not establish an existing-character conversion procedure. If your plan depends on retaining one character's progress while changing its gender, wait for the corresponding rule before relying on it.

A simpler alternative is to consider the later combination as a possible new character. That is a decision about starting again, not a claim that every character-specific item or unlock transfers. Evaluate how much you want to invest in the initial character with that distinction in mind.

For example, a character you enjoy now can be worth playing even if you eventually create another one. A character chosen only as a placeholder for an unannounced conversion is a less certain investment. The difference is your own intended use, rather than a promised service the game has not described.

Coordinate your eventual character with your group

If you wait for a new gender option and then join friends, agree on the actual server before creating that character. Early Access rules do not allow character transfers between servers, and players on different servers cannot play together.

That restriction is independent of the character-creation rollout. A later option gives you another pairing to select, while the server decision still determines whom you can join. Automatic region selection should therefore be checked against your group's chosen server rather than accepted without comparison.

When the relevant update is released, confirm three concrete things: that the desired class option is publicly available, that any existing-character procedure you need has been explained, and that you are creating or joining on the correct server. Those checks turn the phased gender-unlock plan into a usable character decision without relying on an old test screenshot or an unspecified future conversion.
